What is Rolfing®?

Structural Integration nicknamed Rolfing® after its founder biochemist Dr. Ida Rolf, is a form of bodywork. Dr. Ida Rolf, believed that the human body is not a collection of separate parts but rather a complex network of seamless tissue that encompasses all of our joints, bones, muscles, and organs. Over years of studying, she realized that gravity was changing the soft tissues of the body. One of the most popular quotes from Dr. Ida Rolf,

“Some individuals may perceive their losing fight with gravity as a sharp pain in their back, others as the unflattering contour of their body, others as constant fatigue, yet others as an unrelenting threatening environment. Those over forty may call it old age. And yet all these signals may be pointing to a single problem so prominent in their own structure, as well as others, that it has been ignored: they are off balance, they are at war with gravity.”

The “war with gravity” can result in imbalances in an area. These imbalances can then turn into compensatory patterns throughout the whole body. Dr. Rolf developed Structural Integration to help address the body as it grows and the relationship with gravity changes.

Through Rolfing® and the ten series practitioners try to realign and balance the body of the patient, lowering the discomfort and alleviating pain. For more information click below.

Rolfers™, Chiropractors, and Massage Therapist have similarities and differences. I have created a chart below for a quick reference point.

These are just my views to help explain Rolfing® . I respect and value all other modalities and practitioners. Like most things in life what works for some does not work for others.

Below are some of my favorite quotes from Dr. Ida Rolf.

  • "It's not how deep you go, it's how you go deep"

  • "Strength that has effort in it is not what you need; you need the strength that is the result of ease."

  • "You can't get beyond the body unless you free the body itself."

    Dr. Ida Rolf

  • "The body is solid material wrapped around the breath."
